Alfred "A.B." Hurt,

Mr. Alfred Burman Hurt, Jr. passed away Monday, December 12 at the age of 91. Born in the Nathans Creek Community of Ashe County. A.B. attended Nathans Creek School where his father, A.B. Hurt, Sr. served as teacher and principal.  Upon graduation, A.B. attended Milligan College in east Tennessee, transferring to North Carolina State University to complete his undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering. His engineering experience centered upon his work with DuPont Chemicals in Delaware, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. A.B.'s service to his country began during the second World War, culminating in his retirement from the U.S. Naval Reserves as a captain. His civic commitments included various charitable causes with the most important being the creation of the Ruth Cox and Alfred B. Hurt, Sr. Scholarship Fund, which offers recognition for the academic achievements of Ashe County High School seniors. Mr. Hurt is survived by his wife, Ruth Dixon Hurt of Jefferson and his daughter, Cheryl H. Radley of Davidson, NC; grandson, Scott (Lettie) Radley of Huntersville; great-granddaughters, Aubrey and Chloe Radley and one sister, Albertine (Walter) Bauguess of Austin, Texas. Additional survivors include step-children, Don (Judy) Dixon of Middletown, OH; Beth Dixon of Jefferson; Kent Dixon of Sparta and Tod (Cynthia) Dixon of Crumpler. Mr. Hurt is also survived by various nieces and nephews. Mr. Hurt was preceded in death by his wife, Orla Abernathy Hurt; parents Ruth Cox and Alfred Burman Hurt, Sr.; brothers Joe and Robert Hurt; grandson Keith Radley and son-in-aw, Robert Radley. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 2:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Tim Starbuck and Rev. Rob Brooks. Burial will follow in Senter Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with military rites.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Thursday at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.  In lieu of flowers memorials may be made toAlzheimer's Association PO Box 96011, Washington DC 20090, Ruth Cox & Alfred B.
