Amanda Kate Duncan Barker

Mrs. Amanda "Kate" Duncan Barker, age 97 of Jefferson, died on Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at Ashe Assisted Living. Mrs. Barker was born on October 27, 1918 in Statesville, NC, one of eight children born to the late Henry Clay and Sarah Arlene Watts King.

Mrs. Barker graduated from Scotts High School and H.F. Long School of Nursing. She was a well-respected nurse working with Doctors Dean C. Jones, Sr. and Dean C. Jones, Jr., retiring after 40 plus years of service.

Kate faithfully attended Shelter Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking, painting, needle work, working in her garden and taking care of others.

She was a devoted wife, who was preceded in death by her first husband, Stewart Greer Duncan and second husband, Thomas Christopher Barker, three brothers, Charlie Bob King, Ray Watts King, Fieldon King, four sisters, Katherine King Kasey, Addie King Jenkins, Mary King Sherrill, Nancy King Pearson, step daughter, Cleda Mullis Wilcox and step-son, Robert Lee Barker..

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 18, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Billy Joe Blevins and Rev. Mike McElhaney. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Friday, December 18, 2015 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. Barker is survived by: two stepdaughters, Shirley Wallace of Jefferson, Brenda Johnson of Advance; also surviving are 8 step-grandchildren, several step-great- grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ashe Services for the Aging, 180 Chattyrob Lane, West Jefferson, NC 28694, or to Medi Home Hospice, P.O. Box 421, Jefferson, NC 28640.
