Ann Ashby Helms of West Jefferson, North Carolina passed away peacefully at her home on November 12, 2023. Elizabeth Ann Ashby was born in Mount Airy, North Carolina on September 26, 1928, to the late John Lafayette and May McArn Ashby. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Houston Helms Sr. as well as a brother, John Lafayette Ashby Jr. Ann as she was affectionately known, graced this world with her presence for 95 years.
Mrs. Helms’ early years were marked by a love for learning, leading her to graduate from Mount Airy High School. Eager to expand her horizons, she pursued higher education at Mary Baldwin College and The Parsons School of Design of New York, where her passion for art and design flourished. These formative years laid the foundation for a life dedicated to creativity and beauty.
Her career unfolded with grace and purpose. Initially, Ann embraced her role as a grade school teacher, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of young minds. Her commitment to education was evident in the hearts she would touch for years to come. Later, Ann transitioned into the world of interior design, where her innate sense of style and keen eye for aesthetics shone brightly. Her creations transformed spaces into living works of art, reflecting her unique blend of sophistication and warmth.
Ann leaves behind cherished memories in the hearts of her family, friends, and the countless lives she touched. Ann found immeasurable joy in the companionship of her cats. She also enjoyed getting together with her group of friends known as the “Scrabble Divas”.
Mrs. Helms is survived by her son, Gerald Houston Helms, Jr. and wife, Anita Wocher Helms, one grandson, Garrett Houston Helms all of Cramerton, NC as well as her beloved cat, Tiger.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, November 17, 2023 at 12:00 noon at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Peter Parrish. Following the service everyone is invited to a meal in Ashelawn’s Community Room, for a time of remembrance and fellowship. Burial will take place in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Ashe County Arts Council; 303 School Ave. West Jefferson, NC 28694.
