Carl Lee Shatley

Carl Lee Shatley, age 82 of Laurel Springs passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at Forsyth Medical Center.  Mr. Shatley was born on December 14, 1941 in Ashe County, North Carolina to the late Charles and Velma Osborne Shatley.  In addition to his parents Carl was also preceded in death by three brothers, Ray Dean Shatley, Glen Allen Royal and Robert Royal as well as his long-time companion, Maude Calhoun.

Carl was known for his infectious laughter, his boundless love for life, and his remarkable sense of humor, bringing joy and laughter wherever he went. His mischievous spirit and penchant for pranks earned him the title of the family jokester, a role he embraced with gusto and flair (and always "bona fide" of course). Carl's humor could light up any room and bring smiles to those around him. Beyond his playful nature, Carl was an avid reader and could often be found spending time at the library when his health allowed.

Carl will be remembered fondly by his family and friends for his zest for life, his unwavering kindness, and his ability to find humor in even the darkest of times. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter and love that will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Left to cherish his memory are four sisters, Mary Johnson of Laurel Springs, Lib Walton and husband, Bill of Crumpler, Sarah Severt and husband, Eddie of West Jefferson and Betty Dollar of Jefferson, four brothers, Larry Shatley and wife, Louise of Sparta, Gene Royal and wife, Butchie, Victor Royal and wife, Barbara and David Royal and wife, Tabatha all of West Jefferson. Also surviving is Carl’s special friend, Debbie Dishman as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, April 7, 2024 at 2:00pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. J.D. Walton and Rev. Lloyd Day.  Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with Military Rites.

The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00pm one hour prior to the service.

Flower will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association; 31 College Place Suite D-320, Asheville, NC 28801.

Though Carl may no longer be with us in body, his spirit will live on in the memories we hold dear and the laughter that echoes in our hearts. May he rest in peace, knowing that he was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
