Donald Ray McMillan, age 86, of Crumpler died on Saturday, July 5, 2014 at his residence with his beloved wife, Mabel, daughter, Eika, and son-in-law, Jeff, by his side. Mr. McMillan was born October 1, 1927 in Crumpler to the late Frank and Goldie Blevins McMillan.
Although Mr. McMillan was born and died in Crumpler, he lived a very adventurous life. Working with the Nello L. Teer Company, for the majority of his career he lived in Central America, South America and the Caribbean where he loved meeting people, immersing himself in their cultures and learning the Spanish language like a native. One of the highlights of his career was working on the Guri Dam project in Venezuela, one of the biggest dams in the world. Another chapter in his life included serving in the Army during the Korean War.
Mr. McMillan is survived by his wife, Mabel Pennington McMillan; daughter, Eika Knight of Raleigh, son-in-law, Jeff, and grandson, Forrest; daughter, Donna Howell of Crumpler, son-in-law, Kenny, granddaughters: Kendra, Kristin and Katlyn, and 3 great grandchildren; brother, Lee McMillan of Crumpler; and niece, Tracie Jordan of Jefferson.
