Dr. Lawrence G. Kautz died peacefully at home on August 21, 2014, in Crumpler, NC, at the age of 81.
Dr. Kautz is survived by Nancy, his wife of 51 years, children, Lawrence G. Kautz Jr. (Michelle) of Liberty Township, Ohio, Anthony Wayne Kautz (Carla) of Park Hills, KY and Constance Elizabeth King (Kevin) of German Town, Il; Brother Harold A Kautz of Byrdstown, TN, 12 Grandchildren and 7 Great Grandchildren and several beloved nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by infant son David Allen Kautz.
Larry was born on February 13, 1933 in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Harold and Elizabeth Kautz. After serving his country for 3 years, during the Korean war, Larry returned to continue his studies. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1961 with a Medical Degree. He married Nancy, an RN at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami Florida, in 1963. After a Pediatric Residency at Children's Memorial in Chicago Il, he began practice in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1965 and was a full professor at the University of Cincinnati Medical College until 1987. After leaving Cincinnati in 1987, the couple settled in Ashe County, NC where he practiced for 20 years and was on the active staff at Ashe Memorial Hospital. The couple welcomed 4 children into their home. His children remember him as a gentle, patient father and grandfather who encouraged them to pursue their goals and taught 10 of his grandchildren how to ski.
Dr. Kautz was an accomplished and dedicated genealogist, author, and pediatrician, who often supplied distant relatives with information about family roots. He was a witty individual who loved backpacking the Appalachian Trail, Skiing and after retirement, was passionate about golf. He was an active and dedicated member of St. Francis Catholic Church; The St. Francis Men's Club, the School Based Health Center Board, the Ashe Child Mortality Task Force, and often volunteered at the Ashe County Christmas Project as well as other community functions.
A funeral mass is scheduled for 6:00pm, Monday, August 25,2014 at St. Francis Catholic Church with a reception to follow at the church fellowship hall. Father James Stuhrenberg, will officiate at the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dr. Kautz's life. The family will recieve friends on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 from 1:00-2:00 pm at Mihovk Rosenacker Funeral Home in Cincinnati. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Memorial Park with Father Roland Hautz officiating and military rites.
