Elder Floyd F. South, age 90, of West Jefferson, peacefully entered into the presence of the Savior he so faithfully preached about on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.
Born in Ashe County on Thursday, February 21, 1935, he was the son of the late Frelin and Esther Burgess South. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of many years, Lea Ella Howell South, who passed on February 4, 2024; his brothers, Earnest, Lloyd, and Glenn South; his sisters, Stella Mae South and Boyd Mickey; and his son-in-law, Ronnie Barnes.
A devoted man of faith, Elder South dedicated his life to ministry, traveling countless miles to share the love and gospel of Jesus Christ. He was a kind and tender-hearted man who never met a stranger. He and Lea Ella shared a special bond, often enjoying long drives with their daughter Jennifer, searching for deer and appreciating the beauty of God’s creation.
Floyd had a deep love for sports, especially UNC Tar Heel basketball. An avid golfer, he won several tournaments and even achieved a hole-in-one. He worked for over 30 years as a tile installer with Burgess Furniture and was known for his strong work ethic and dedication.
Above all, Floyd cherished his family. He and Lea Ella were devoted caregivers to their daughter, Jennifer, and he dearly loved all his girls.
Elder South is survived by his daughters: Teresa Barnes of Taylorsville, Robin Privette (Eric) of Jefferson, Elaine Johnson (Brandon) of Wilkesboro, and Jennifer South of West Jefferson, grandchildren, Chris Barnes (Deann) of Conover, Andy Calhoun (Ashley) of West Jefferson, Quinn Privette (Rose) of West Jefferson and Leah Ingersoll (Jared) of West Jefferson, great-grandchildren Owen Calhoun, Mariella Calhoun, Emmaline Ingersoll, and Lucy Ingersoll, and sister, Barbara South Dillard (Dean) of Mocksville. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel, officiated by his grandson, Pastor Quinn Privette. Elder South will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Calloway Cemetery.
