Gary Daniel Mahaffey, a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on Monday, August 28, 2023, at his home. Born on March 21, 1952, in Ashe County, North Carolina, Gary was the son of the late Raymond Dean Mahaffey and Pauline Pennington Mahaffey.
His love for fishing, hunting, and working on old cars was evident to all who knew him. Whether he was patiently waiting by the water's edge, seeking the thrill of the hunt, or restoring the beauty of vintage automobiles, Gary found solace and joy in these pursuits.
But perhaps it was Gary's warmth and approachable nature that left the most lasting impression on those who crossed his path. He had an uncanny ability to strike up conversations with anyone, turning strangers into friends in an instant. His genuine interest in people, their stories, and their lives created a sense of camaraderie that endeared him to countless hearts.
As a dedicated member of Apple Grove Baptist Church, Gary's faith was an integral part of his life. Gary's kindness and compassion mirrored the teachings he held dear.
Mr. Mahaffey is survived by: his wife of 52 years, Wanda Miller Mahaffey; two daughters, Michelle Wingler (David) of Whitetop, Virginia and Renee Mahaffey of Lansing; three brothers, Dean Mahaffey, Neal Mahaffey, and Thomas Mahaffey, all of Creston; four sisters, Betty Ann Richardson of Lansing, Carolyn Mahaffey of Thomasville, Patsy Graybeal of Creston, and Joyce Mahaffey of Lansing; seven grandchildren, Tori Adams, Brittany Mahaffey, Jadi Roland (Malcolm), Daniel Wingler, Chelsea Perry, Julie Greene, and Alyse Malafronti; also surviving are six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate Gary's life will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2023 at 5:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Saturday, September 2, 2023 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, VA 22116-7023.
"Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near; still loved, still missed, and forever dear."
