Elder General Grant Carpenter, age 97, of Creston, passed away February 14, 2007, at Mountain City Care Center in Mountain City, TN. Elder Carpenter was born August 22, 1909 in Ashe County, NC to the late Floyd and Rose Calhoun Carpenter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and eight sisters; his first wife, Hattie Hall Carpenter, their daughter, Minnie Carpenter, and two sons, Denver and Dennis Carpenter; his second wife of 60 years, Ruth Pauline Richardson Carpenter and two daughters, Ruby Carpenter Roland and Jeanette Carpenter Miller. Elder Carpenter was a self-employed farmer. He was called into the ministry in the 1940's. He pastored churches in North Carolina and Virginia.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 18, 2007 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel in Jefferson, NC. Reverend Denton Hart, Elder Bluferd Eldreth, and Elder Ronda Rash will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday prior to the funeral service at Ashelawn. Friends may call any time at the home of Ima Jean Payne, 6707 Forge Creek Road, Mountain City, TN. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Western North Carolina Chapter, 3 Louisiana Avenue, Asheville, NC 28806.
Elder Carpenter is survived by:
Two daughters: Ima Jean Payne and husband, Paul of Mountain City, TN; and Carol Dixon and husband Charles of Denton, NC.
Three sons: Johnny Darrell Carpenter and wife, Elaine of Elkton, MD; Roger Carpenter and wife, Sheila of Creston, NC; and Thomas Carpenter and wife, Cindy of Creston, NC.
One sister: Irene Carpenter Poe of Kennett Square, PA.
Also surviving are 27 grandchildren, a number of great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
