George "Gene" Black

Mr. George Eugene "Gene" Black, age 85, of Jefferson, NC died on Friday, April 23, 2010 at Margate Health and Rehab in Jefferson, NC. Mr. Black was born on June 24, 1924 in Ashe County, NC to the late Martin Howard Black and Tencie Todd Lambert Black. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Raye Greene Black, sisters Louella Black and Myrtle Little, and brothers, Howard Black, Jr. and Archie Black. Mr. Black served in the Army during WWII in the European Theatre of Germany and France. He retired from Thomasville Furniture after 25 years. His interests included working on lawnmowers and bicycles. He enjoyed camping and loved animals.  Funeral services will be held on Sunday, April 25, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Tim Roten. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with military rites. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on , at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel & Gardens.  Mr. Black is survived by: Son - Eddie Black and wife Anita of Jefferson, NC; Brothers - Robert Harold Black of Jefferson, NC, and Tony Black of Crumpler, NC; Sisters - Maxine Wyatt of Maryland, Grace Weitzel of Maryland; Step Grandson - Greg Lipford; also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Flowers will be appreciated, or memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, 446 Ashe Park Rd., Jefferson, NC 28640 or to the Alzheimers Association, Mountain Regional Office, 31 College Place, Suite D-320, Asheville, NC 28801-2644.  You may send and view condolences to the family through our website www.ashelawn.com.
