George Truett Eller Sr

George Truett Eller Sr

George Truett Eller, Sr., 88, died on Saturday, May 11, 2013 in his home in Lansing, North Carolina. He was born and grew up in Ashe County and served in the South Pacific during World War II as a Naval medic and was a member of the local American Legion for over 60 years. After his naval service he returned to his roots serving as a teacher and coach at Lansing High School where he coached two undefeated football teams in 1961-2 and 1962-3, resulting in his induction into the Ashe County Sports Hall of Fame. He became Principal of Lansing Elementary School in 1965, a position he would hold for 29 years. He was a lifetime member of Phoenix Baptist Church. He loved golfing, fishing, traveling, his garden, the beach and Christmas, but his two greatest loves were his family and his Alma Mater, Wake Forest University.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marilyn Jones Eller of Lansing; two daughters, Jane Eller Lacy and husband Chuck of Wytheville, Virginia, and Ann Eller of Cary; two sons, George Truett Eller, Jr. and wife Linda of Lansing, and John Eller and wife Beth, of Clemmons; three step-children, Ben Jones of Purlear, Brenda Bell of West Jefferson, and Sylvia Duncan, of Jefferson; and six beloved grandchildren, Emily, Charles and Megan Lacy, Gus and Josh Eller, and Sybol Eller. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Peed Eller, and his parents, Edwin Cicero and Susan Harless Eller.

Visitation will be held at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel, Jefferson, North Carolina on Tuesday, May 14, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. A funeral service in honor of his life will be held on Wednesday, May 15 at 1:00 p.m.at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel, with Reverend Pete Parish presiding. Military Rites will follow the service in the chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Camp Elk Shoals, PO Box 208, West Jefferson, NC; Ashe Memorial Hospital, 200 Hospital Ave., Jefferson, NC 28640; or the American Cancer Society, c/o Lisa Bottomley, 87 Montview Drive, Sparta, NC 28675.
