Mr. George Dewey Roten, Jr. of West Jefferson died on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mr. Roten was born in Ashe County, NC to the late Elder George Dewey and Flossie Arnold Roten. Mr. Roten was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Gwyn Roten, Glen Roten, Edward Roten and Dane Roten, his sister, Elva Roten Bumgarner. Mr. Roten enjoyed farming, raising tomatoes and fishing. He was a member of Riverview Primitive Baptist Church. He served in the US Army during the Korean conflict and was stationed in Germany. George owned and operated the 163 Grocery in West Jefferson for many years. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 11:00 am at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Wayne Osborne and Elder Bobby Absher. Burial will follow in the Walters Cemetery by Elder. James Dewey McNeill. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, June 10, 2011 at Badger Funeral Home. Mr. Roten is survived by: his wife, Shelby Walters Roten, son, Danny Roten and wife Renita of West Jefferson, daughter, Debbie Roten Campbell and husband Marcus of Greensboro, brother, Ray Roten and wife Shirley of Raleigh, NC, sister, Mary Bare and husband Dean of West Jefferson, grandchildren, Kristen Campbell and Kelsey Campbell, step grandchildren, Brian McNeill and Ashleigh McNeill. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
