James Alfred Badger, 81, of Jefferson, died Tuesday morning, April 1, 2003 at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte, NC. Mr. Badger was born Feb. 23, 1922 in Jefferson, NC to Roy R. and Bessie Hartsog Badger. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Army in the European Campaign. He was a successful businessman who entertained many business adventures during his career. He is best remembered as owner and manager of Badger Funeral Home where he served Ashe and surrounding counties for fifty-six years. Mr. Badger was known for his kind and compassionate service offered to all people. He was an active member of the board of directors of Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mr. R.D. Williams, hospital administrator, stated: "Mr. Badger was a valued member of the Ashe Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees from 1988 to the present. His service on the board continued his family's tradition of support for this hospital. Mr. Badger's leadership and guidance will be missed." He was also a retired member of the board of directors of First Citizens Bank.
Mr. Badger exemplified a great love for his native Ashe County, where his many contributions and influences were used to promote the county. Mr. Badger's special love for children afforded him the devotion of children of all ages. Ashe County's friend, James A. Badger, will long be remembered in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have known him.
Funeral services for Mr. Badger will conducted on Friday afternoon at 2:00 PM at the Fletcher Baptist Church in Jefferson, NC by the Rev. Jeff Vogler, Rev. Bill Ballou and David VanHoy. The family will receive friends on Thursday afternoon from 1:00-3:00 and Thursday evening from 6:00-9:00. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens in Jefferson with military rites.
Mr. Badger is survived by his wife, Erma Hart Badger of the home. One son: Michael Badger of Jefferson; three daughters: Rebecca Houck of North Wilkesboro, Lois Miller and Jennifer Holman of Wilkesboro; one brother, Bill Badger of Jefferson; two sisters, Giona Badger Cook and Edith Badger Conklin both of Jefferson; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.
