James “Dawg” Carey Wood

James Carey Wood, better known as “Dawg,” age 65, of West Jefferson, passed away on Monday, January 6, 2025. He was born on January 5, 1960 in Rome, Georgia to Donald and Connie Duke Wood. He was preceded in death by his father.

Born with a deep appreciation for life and service, he proudly served his country as a B-52 Crew Chief in the United States Air Force. After his military service, he pursued higher education and graduated from the University of West Georgia with a bachelor’s degree in Geology.

Following his studies and ten years in industrial sales, James followed his heart to the Appalachian Mountains, where he found his true calling.

Dawg was a true Appalachian mountain man, who proudly called downtown West Jefferson his home. With his bear claw necklace around his neck, he was a familiar sight as he walked around town, exuding his rugged but friendly charm. A man of many talents, Dawg enjoyed sharing tales of his bear hunting adventures, often reminiscing about the dogs he trained to assist in the hunt. His interests extended far beyond that, as he found joy in a variety of hobbies. Whether carving, playing the fiddle, or tapping into his creative side through drawing and painting, he completely immersed himself in the culture, traditions, art, and music of the region. A talented Appalachian artist and self-taught fiddle player, James was passionate about sharing the stories of the mountains through his creations and melodies. His artistry captured the spirit of the region, and his music resonated with the history and soul of Appalachia. Although Dawg didn’t start his artistic journey of drawing and painting until later in life, he found great fulfillment in it, helping him open a new chapter of life. Using pen and acrylic paint, he worked meticulously, one stroke at a time, transforming his thoughts and experiences into vibrant artwork. This creative expression not only brought him joy but also provided a sense of clarity and purpose, helping him navigate life in a fresh and meaningful way.

Surviving are two brothers, Anthony Wood (Debbie) of Newnan, GA and Kevin Wood (Syletia) and his mother, Connie Wood both of Carrollton, GA, his nieces and nephews, Katlynne Benizzi, Dylan Wood, Brianna Nave and Brenton Wood as well as two great-nephews Maddox Benizzi and Jaxon Benizzi.
