James Herman

James Monroe Herman, age 78 of West Jefferson in the Baldwin community, died Independence Day at Ashe Memorial Hospital.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2003 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel, Jefferson, NC. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Stephen A. Miller of the Parish of the Holy Communion will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until time of service Sunday at the Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.

Mr. Herman was born January 26, 1925 in Catawba County to Monroe and Artie Mitchell Herman. He grew up in Valle Crusis, Watauga County. Mr. Herman served in WWII with the Signal Corp stationed in Europe. When the Korean conflict developed, Mr. Herman was called back into service and was stationed in the states. When he moved his family to Ashe County in 1956, a new co-op for telephone service was just getting started. He was Skyline Telephone's first male employee, installing phones and troubleshooting. He and his wife eventually settled in the Baldwin community and were members at St. Mary's Episcopal Church. He was in charge of maintenance for the five county area served by Skyline and retired February 1987 after 31 years of service. In his retirement years, Mr. Herman was active in community affairs and public service. He particularly enjoyed his activities with the Ashe County VFW.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jean Tester Herman, sons: Mike and his wife Rhonda of Jefferson, Tom and his wife Vickie of Fleetwood, David and wife Cindy of Charlotte, Rick of West Jefferson; two daughters: Jeanette Herman of West Jefferson, and Rebecca Herman of West Jefferson; one sister, Reba Chapman of Charlotte; grandchildren: Jason, Tiffany, Andy, Jonathan, Tracy, and Martha; great-grandchildren: Dalton, Alex and Samantha; two nieces and numerous other relatives.
