James Tyre Holbrook, age 91, of Thurmond, NC, formerly of Warrensville, NC, passed away on Monday, September 4, 2023, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. He was born on August 6, 1932, in Wilkes County to the late John Herman Holbrook and Bessie Lucille Royal Holbrook. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jean Gilley Holbrook, an infant sister, Emagene Holbrook, two daughters, Norma Gene Holbrook and Bonnie Kay Holbrook, brother-in-law, Charlie Gambill, sister-in-law, Edith Holbrook, and a niece Debra Gambill Adams.
James was a devoted member of Living Waters Church, where he opened up for Sunday school, sharing his faith and love for the community. He served his country with honor in the U.S. Air Force.
James found the love of his life in Jean, and they shared a deep and enduring bond until her passing on August 3, 2016. In his later years, he resided at Rose Glen Manor in North Wilkesboro, where he continued to brighten the lives of those around him.
Nothing brought James more joy than indulging in KFC chicken or savoring a plate of fried salt and pepper catfish. He also enjoyed the simple pleasures of solving word search puzzles and found solace in reading his Bible daily.
Mr. Holbrook is survived by a brother, John Wiley Holbrook of Thurmond; a sister, Mary Lucille Gambill of Elkin; a stepson, Toby Eller (Lois) of West Jefferson; three nieces, Wanda Holbrook Hincher of Thurmond, Kathy Holbrook Poteate (Jeff) of Yadkinville, and Karen Gambill Gregory (Dale) of Thurmond.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Dean Shaw. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with military rites by Shaw Air Force Base and V.F.W. Post 1142 of North Wilkesboro.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Thursday, September 7, 2023 prior to the service.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Living Waters Church, 413 Perry Hollow Road, Lansing, NC 28643.
He will be remembered for his unwavering faith, love for his family, and his ability to find joy in life's simple pleasures. He leaves behind cherished memories and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
