Mr. James Elmer “Jim” Owens, Jr., age 66, died on Saturday, July 21, 2018. The native of Ashe County, North Carolina was a 1970 graduate of Northwest Ashe High School. Shortly after he graduated, he was drafted in the United States Army, where he proudly served his country for nearly 21 years. He retired as a 1st Sergeant in the Army Special Forces. He was awarded the Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal with One Bronze Star, Overseas Service Ribbon(30), Army Commendation Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster), Meritorious Service Medal ( 2nd Oak Leaf Cluster, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea), Army Good Conduct Medal (6th Award). After retiring from the Army, Jim moved to Statesboro in 1995 where he started his second career as a truck driver. He was preceded in death by his father, James Elmer Owens, Sr., and a sister, Deborah Lynn Owens.
He is survived by his wife, Eva Faye Owens of Sylvania, Georgia; a son and daughter-in-law, James F. (Heather) Owens, Sr., of Register, Georgia; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy (Rick) Antol of Weirton, West Virginia; daughter and son-in-law, Stacy (Will) Hicks of Jacksonville, Florida; son and daughter-in-law, David (Melanie) Baker, of Stillwater, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren, Allie Owens, James F. Owens, Jr., Samantha Antol, Hunter Antol, Summer Lisbon, Justin Hicks, Cambree Hicks, and Amber Rushing; and two great-grandchildren; his mother, Joann Owens of Creston, North Carolina; and two sisters and a brother-in-law, Patricia and Robert Lefevers of Creston, North Carolina, and Pamela Owens of Creston, North Carolina.
The family will receive visitors on Wednesday from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
The funeral will be on Thursday at 11:00am in the Chapel of Joiner-Anderson with Dr. John Parker officiating.
Interment, with military honors, will follow in Upper Mill Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be George Rogers, JD Meadow, Jay Ellis, Billy Milton, Matt Canty, and Jayson Ellis.
