Jeanette Ashley Webster, age 99 of Jefferson, died Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. She was born June 13, 1921 in Fairmont, NC to the late James and Frances Edmond Ashley. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Phyllis Wimbrow, Kathryn Adams, Frances Castevens, Margaret Oliver, Iola McDonnell, James (Red) Ashley, Chester Ashley and Norman Ashley. She and her late husband, Charles Davis Webster were happily married for almost 60 years. Their son, Charles Davis Webster Jr. (Charlie), died when was only 20 years old.
Jeanette graduated from Fairmont High School and Atlanta Business College. She was employed at Maxton Air Force Base in civilian personnel for the duration of the war. She was employed by the USDA during tobacco season for 20 years. She volunteered at Southeastern General Hospital for 19 years. She was also active in the Sydney Lanier Club, a den mother in scouting and a member of the United Methodist Women. She could always be found working in her yard, caring for camellias, azaleas and raking pine straw. In 2012 Jeanette moved to Mountain Village Apts. in Jefferson to be near her family. She enjoyed her neighbors there, especially her buddies, Edna Hartley (now deceased), Ruby Ellis and Pauline Powers. In early 2020 she moved to Forest Ridge Assisted Living where she was so well cared for. She and her roommate Clairene Cockeram formed a bond of friendship that felt like family.
Mrs. Webster is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Webster Gardiner Wilson and Dick Wilson, two cherished grandchildren, Nathaniel Hawklin Gardiner and wife, Vanessa and Ezra Webster Gardiner. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Earlene Ashley and cousin, Ross Ashley Nikolas, whom she considered sisters. She loved keeping in touch with her more than 20 nieces and nephews.
Graveside services for the family will held Saturday, October 20, 2020 at Floyd Memorial Cemetery in Fairmont, NC.
