Joe Phipps, 74, of Westminster died suddenly on Friday, January 1, 2010 at his home. Born August 10, 1935 in Grassy Creek, NC, he was the son of the late Chester and Madeline Cox Phipps. He was the husband of Shirley J. Baker Phipps, his wife of 48 years, whom he married, June 3, 1961. He was an Air Force Veteran. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering at North Carolina State University and was retired from the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. He was an avid reader and had attended the Church of the Open Door. Surviving in addition to his wife are daughter and son-in-law Susan Phipps Eikenberg and John Eikenberg of Finksburg and son and daughter-in-law David Joe and Dawn Phipps of Littlestown, PA, brother Jack Phipps of Anaheim, CA. Also survived by four grandchildren, Heather Phipps, Kirsten Eikenberg, Sydney Phipps and Alyssa Eikenberg, and great-grandson Aspen Legate and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by siblings Myrtle Wolfe, Lorraine Clark, Cleta Hartsoe, Hazel Licefi, Mary Stockton and Burl and Earl Phipps. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday January 5, 2010 at 11:00 am at the Church of the Open Door in Westminster, MD with Rev. John Campbell officiating. Interment will be in New River Cemetery in Grassy Creek, NC following the visitation, Wednesday, January 6, 2010 by Rev. Wayne Jones. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 from 11:00am-12:00noon at Badger Funeral Home.
