John Charles Payne, age 90 of West Jefferson died Monday, April 1, 2019 at his home. Mr. Payne was born in Statesville, North Carolina on Monday, October 1,1928 to the late Coleman "CM" and Hazel Phillips Payne. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by one brother, Max Payne. John served in the United States Air Force and Air Force Reserve then he later retired as a 1st Sergeant of the local Army National Guard Unit. He was also a member of the Ashe Shrine Club and Ashe Masonic Lodge #594. Mr. Payne was an old car enthusiast, he enjoyed both collecting and restoring them.
Mr. Payne is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mary Sue Miller Payne, one son, Eric Payne and wife Teresa of Fleetwood, one granddaughter, Tonya Hurst and husband Richard of Winston Salem, several nieces and nephews also survive.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, May 18, 2019 at 3:00 in the afternoon at Gap Creek Cemetery with Military and Masonic Rites.
The family respectfully request no flowers please, memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children in care of Ashe Shrine Club at PO Box 244 in Jefferson, NC or to the Ashe Masonic Lodge #594 at PO Box 1911 in West Jefferson, NC or to Caldwell Hospice; 902 Kirkwood St NW, Lenoir, NC 28645.
