Josephine "Jo" Vannoy Booth, 92, of West Jefferson and Raleigh, slipped peacefully away from her old homeplace, and those who loved her, on Monday afternoon, September 12, 2005. She was born in Fleetwood on December 5, 1912, the last of ten children born to Larry Stokes and Nellia Osbourne Vannoy.
Jo grew up in Ashe County. She played basketball for her high school team. Her height and her will to win helped her to be a good basketball player. This competitive spirit stayed with Jo throughout her life.
Jo worked at Camp Pendleton, California during part of World War II. while her husband, George Booth was an army drill sergeant. The army captain in charge of the base office always made Josephine say "North Carolina" before he would let her enter the offices to work each day. Everyone enjoyed hearing her sweet southern accent.
Working as a bookkeeper at K&W, for Grady Alred, Sr., from 1955 - 1965 was the way Josephine took care of her two sons, Larry and Ed Booth. Later, whenever she returned to visit Winston-Salem, Mr. Alred would always give her a free cup of coffee. Jo worked at Meredith College in Raleigh where she supervised students who worked in the cafeteria from 1965 - 1975. The students were a real joy to her. From 1975-1980 she was a real estate broker in Raleigh. She also enjoyed playing bridge, and her some wonderful bridge club friends. For many years she had a weekend sales cubicle at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds flea market. She loved to buy and sell antiques, and make new friends and acquaintances. She loved to spend her summers in West Jefferson and her winters in Raleigh, and traveling between the two places. Besides being a look-alike to Katherine Hepburn, her nickname was "Go Jo."
Brothers and sisters who passed away before Josephine are: Annie Grabiel, Sessie Lemley, Wade Vannoy, Byrl Vannoy, Hazel Vannoy, Ginny Billings, Wick Vannoy, and Ruth Price.
Josephine leaves behind her two sons, George Booth and wife, Bea, of West Jefferson, and Larry Booth, and wife, Vicki, of Chapel Hill; seven grandchildren, Bo, Tobin, Jody, Simon, Jen, Larry Jr., and Christy Booth; and two great-grandchildren, Luke and Stella Booth. One grandson, Benjamin Booth, age 19, preceded Josephine in death.
