Julia Ellen Lonon Mathews

Julia Ellen Lonon Mathews, passed away on September 24, 2024, in Ashe County, North Carolina, at the age of 77. Born on April 28, 1947, in San Diego, California, she was the daughter of the late Oscar Graydon Lonon and Irma Louise Johnson Lonon. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Amy Carson Mathews, two brothers, Robert “Bob” Clayton Lonon and Oscar “Grady” Graydon Lonon as well as one nephew, Clayton Lonon.

Julia’s life was vibrant and filled with creativity and love. She had a passion for arts and crafts, often spending cherished moments creating Christmas ornaments with her late daughter, Amy. Also being a talented seamstress, Julia sewed many beautiful creations including her wedding dress and the dresses of her bridesmaids.

An avid reader, Julia would read books of all genres and anything she could get her hands on. She was also a wonderful cook and baker, renowned for her culinary creations, including her famous "Oysters Mexicali" and the innovative "Hugo Potatoes," which she conjured up during Hurricane Hugo. Julia’s kitchen was a place of warmth and laughter, where family and friends gathered to savor her delicious meals. Her spirit shone brightly as a dedicated graduate and fan of Myers’s Park High School and UNC Charlotte, where she was a former cheerleader.

Throughout her life, Julia served as a loving caregiver for both her daughter Amy and her mother, Irma, providing them with unwavering support and compassion until their passing. Her selflessness and nurturing nature left a lasting impact on all who knew her.

Mrs. Mathews is survived by her husband, James “Jim” Mathews., sister in-law, Jane Lonon of West Jefferson, three nephews, James Lonon, Matthew Lonon, Joseph Lonon and a niece, April Spurlin.

The family has chosen to honor Julia’s request to hold no formal services at this time, they also respectfully request no food or flowers please. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
