J.W. Mayberry, better known as “Jim” or “Toots”, age 92 of Creston, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, July 28, 2024. Born on February 9, 1932 in Creston to Jona Larkin Mayberry and Caledona Daugherty Mayberry, Jim led a remarkable life marked by service, passion, and a deep love for his community.
At the age of 17, Jim left home to join the Army, where he served for two years before continuing his military career in the Air Force as a member of the Security Forces until his retirement. His dedication and bravery took him through the end of the Korean War and into the Vietnam War, where he was honored with the Purple Heart for his valor.
In addition to his military service, Jim was a devoted Ashe County historian, celebrated for his extensive knowledge and passion for the region’s heritage. His green thumb and love for wildlife were evident in the care he took in feeding and watching the creatures that visited his home.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Becky’s mother, Pat Mayberry, and his siblings Gwyn and Rose Mayberry. He is survived by his daughter Becky Mayberry; grandson Alex Carter; granddaughter Alison Carter; pard, Geoff McReynolds; several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.
A public graveside service to honor Jim’s life and legacy will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 3, at his home by Rev. Mike Farmer with military rites. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Ashe Outreach Ministries, P.O. Box 157, Creston, NC 28615.
Jim’s memory will be cherished by all who knew him, and his contributions to both his country and community will not be forgotten.
