L. Pauline Jones Carter, age 88 of Hays, passed away on Monday, December 4, 2023 at Margate Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on April 12, 1935, in Lansing, NC to the late Lester Hesque Jones and Millie Rosetta Blevins Jones. She is the last of the family to “walk to school in the snow barefooted”.
Pauline is preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Jerry Dean Carter, her sister, Alta Euldine Jones, and her brother, Roy Dale Jones.
Pauline’s educational sojourn included Helton Community School, Lansing High School, and Appalachian Teachers’ College. Mrs. Carter was the Librarian and Media Specialist at North Wilkes High School for 33 years and inducted into NWHS Hall of Fame. As a librarian, Pauline had a profound love for literature, spending countless hours immersed in the pages of her favorite books. She volunteered her talent to The Friends of the Wilkes County Library; her superpower was repairing donated books. Reading and encouraging reading were her true passions.
Her adventurous spirit led her to explore new places, and she cherished the memories created during her travels. She did extensive world traveling; her favorite travels took her to the homes of authors who wrote children’s books in the New England area and England.
Pauline lived a life rich with love, laughter, and meaningful experiences. She enjoyed her memberships to Wilkes County Retired School Personnel, the Friends of the Library, the Ashe County Historical Society, Wilkes County Quilters, and The Best Book Club Ever.
Pauline was a faithful member of Maple Grove Baptist Church in Hays, where her spirit of kindness and service shone brightly. Her dedication to her faith and her church community enriched the lives of those around her.
She was a woman of many passions and talents, finding joy in the simple pleasures of life. In addition to her love for reading and traveling, Pauline was a skilled hand quilter and crocheter. Her creations were works of art, reflecting the care and dedication she poured into every stitch. Her culinary skills were equally impressive, and she delighted in preparing delicious meals that brought loved ones together.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Linda C. Seamster (Kenneth W.) of Boone; devoted sister, Rosemary J. Street of North Wilkesboro; and two cherished grandsons, Guy W. Seamster and Russ W. Seamster, both of Boone. Pauline also leaves behind several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends, each touched by her wisdom, warmth, and love.
A Gathering of Remembrance service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Lloyd Day.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm prior to the service on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, her wish was that donations be made to North Wilkes High School, 2986 Traphill Rd., Hays, NC 28635 (please designate "Library" in the memo).
May the memories of L. Pauline Jones Carter bring solace to those who mourn her passing, and may her legacy of love and joy live on in the hearts of all who were privileged to know her.
