Lt. Colonel Grover C. Koontz, U.S. Marine Corps (Ret.) died at his home in Laurel Springs after a short illness. Col. Koontz, a native of Ashe County, had a 30 year career in the Marine Corps; this included combat action in World War 11, Korea, and Viet Nam.
Col. Koontz is survived by his wife, Rose Johnson Koontz of the home; one daughter and son-inlaw, Teresa and Thomas Van Dyke 111 of Yanceyville, NC.; two sons, Keith Koontz of Yanceyville and Jack Koontz and daughter-in-law, Nancy Koontz of San Diego, CA; one sister survives: Jean Grimstead of Virginia Beach, Va. Two grandchildren: Vanessa Van Dyke & Jason Williamson of Clayton; and Thomas and Leslie Van Dyke IV of Reidsville.

A memorial service will be held in the Laurel Fork Presbyterian Church April 15, 2005 at 3:00 PM. Pastor Emily H. Davis will officiate. A military funeral and interment will be held in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C. on May 26, 2005 at 1:00 PM.
