She was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, to the late George Falls and Viola Young Carpenter. In addition to her parents Lucy was also preceded in death by her sisters, Sandra Carpenter Goodloe and Meredith Burns, and her brother, George F. Carpenter.

During her youth, Lucy discovered her passion for music, singing in the chorus and showcasing her talent on the piano throughout high school. She cultivated a lifelong love for literature and was known for her avid reading habits. Her dedication to community service was evident through her involvement with organizations such as the On the Same Page Literary Festival, Friends of the Library, and the Ashe Arts Center. Lucy found great solace and community at Grace Lutheran Church in Boone, where she was a cherished member for 16 years. Known for her strength of character, kindness, and unwavering generosity, Lucy never hesitated to lend a helping hand and approached life with a spirit of resilience. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, and doting grandmother, finding immense joy in the company of her friends both in Ashe and across Fayetteville and Charlotte.

Lucy Carpenter Smyre's presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her, but her legacy of love, compassion, and service will continue to inspire and uplift those whose lives she touched.
