Mabel Barker Roten, age 64, of Creston, passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. Born and raised in Ashe County to the late William Worth and Ossie Rebecca Miller Barker. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by an infant sister and her husband, Leonard Clayton “L.C.” Roten. Mabel was a beloved member of her community, known for her kind spirit and dedication to her family, friends, and church.
Mabel is survived by her loving family, including three sisters: Mackie Roten of Creston, Robin Jones of West Jefferson, and Shirley Neaves of Laurel Springs; and two brothers: Billy Barker of Laurel Springs and Buster Barker of Creston. She is also cherished by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, and great-great-nephews.
Though Mabel had no children of her own, she was a mother to many. She always loved working with children and eagerly looked forward to helping with Vacation Bible School. A dedicated member of Big Laurel Church of Christ in Christian Union, Mabel loved attending church and was deeply involved in its activities.
Mabel had a talent for crocheting and made beautiful blankets for all her family members. She loved to travel with her family and was always ready for an adventure. Her generosity extended to the wider community through her volunteer work at Riverview Community Center, where she helped deliver home meals.
Funeral services to honor Mabel’s life will be held on Monday, May 27, 2024 at 5:00 PM at Big Laurel Church of Christ in Christian Union, officiated by Rev. Darrell Graybeal and Rev. Mike Farmer. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM until 5:00 PM, prior to the service at the church.
