It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Madge Bower McNeill, a remarkable woman who lived a long and fulfilling life of 94 years. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and sister as well as a dedicated member of her community where she left an indelible mark through her unwavering commitment to service.
Born and raised in Ashe County to the late George Cecil and Hattie Bare Bower. Madge possessed a great love for her hometown. She wholeheartedly embraced her role as a lifelong resident and took great pride in being an active member of the community. For many years, she selflessly volunteered at Ashe Memorial Hospital, offering her compassionate support to patients and their families during their times of need. Her commitment to the well-being of others left an indelible impact on the lives of many. A civic-minded individual, Madge demonstrated her deep commitment to the betterment of her community, constantly lending a helping hand to local organizations or participating in community projects. Mrs. McNeill was an active member of West Jefferson First Baptist Church throughout her adult life. She served on various committees and groups within the church, dedicating her time and energy to supporting the spiritual needs of her fellow congregants. Her unwavering faith and commitment to her church served as a guiding light, inspiring others to embrace the power of faith and community.
Family was the heart and soul of Madge's life, and she adored her role as a devoted grandmother. She showered her grandchildren with boundless love, nurturing their growth and instilling in them the values of kindness, compassion, and resilience. Alongside her late husband, she embarked on countless adventures, exploring the different places they would travel to.
In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, William Dean McNeill, three brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by her loving family including one son, Terry McNeill and wife, Susan of Burlington, one daughter, Pamela Shatley of Crumpler, two sisters, Audrey Bower Hurley of West Jefferson and Wanda Waldenberger of Arizona, five grandchildren, Stephanie McNeill Ray and husband, Joseph, Allison Leigh McNeill, Andrew Shatley, Laura Monfiston and husband, Dominque and Nathan Shatley and wife, Heather, eight great-grandchildren, Chase and Katelynn Ray, Amaliyah Shatley, Adrian Winterton, Avery Dillard, Gabriel, Parker and Connor Shatley.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church of West Jefferson by Rev. Patricia Turner. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:00-2:00 pm prior to the service at the church.
