Maude Burgess Shatley, age 94 of West Jefferson passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2025 at Margate Health & Rehab Center. Mrs. Shatley was born in Ashe County on Sunday, September 21, 1930 to the late George Oscar and Golda Miller Burgess. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Joe Shatley; her stepmother, Millie Lee Bare Burgess; brothers, Robert Dean Burgess and George Albert Burgess; sisters, Shirley Burgess Roten, Hazel Burgess Barbour and Rose Burgess Cook; nephews, Mike Burgess and Dan Cook.
Mrs. Shatley is survived by one brother, Wayne Burgess and wife Becky of West Jefferson, sister-in-law, Jean Turner Reeves; nieces and nephews, Tommy Barbour, Rob Burgess, Amy Burgess Little, Sandy Maccioli, Sherri DiLorenzo, Allison Hodges, Jan Deckert, Jackie Badger, Jerry Burgess and Eric Burgess. Also surviving are several great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to her caregivers who so devotedly cared for Maude during her illness, Terri Greer, Lisa Greene, Linda Dolinger, Pam Calhoun, Nancy Watson, Medi Home Hospice and the staff at Margate. They took such good care of her and loved her so much, and it was reciprocated.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 7, 2025, at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church of West Jefferson by Rev. Dr. Michael Lea. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at First Baptist Church.
Maude was known for her generous heart and dedication to helping others. She was a true friend to many and her community, especially The West Jefferson Lion's Club and The Ashe Food Pantry (which she helped found as The Sharing Center).
She was a true servant of God and her church where she taught the same Sunday School Class for 47 years. She was a faithful member of the Women’s club and loved the women’s Bible Studies at First Baptist. In 2020 she received The Order of The Long Leaf Pine in recognition of her contributions to her state and her community, the highest service award the state gives.
