Mervyn Odell Russell, born on June 20, 1945, in Pope Arkansas, passed away peacefully on August 25,2024, at Ashe Memorial Hospital. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and godfather whose legacy will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.
Raised in a modest farming community in Arkansas, Mervyn was the oldest of seven children. From a young age, he displayed a remarkable sense of responsibility, nurturing and supporting his younger siblings as they grew up picking cotton on the farm. This formative experience instilled in him a strong work ethic and a commitment to family values he carried throughout his life.
His years of service to his country were profound. Mervyn served in the US Army Reserves and subsequently volunteered for service with the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. It was during this time that he began a pen pal correspondence with a young lady named Becky Graybeal. This heartfelt exchange blossomed into a loving marriage that lasted 56 years, highlighting his enduring commitment to his family.
Mervyn's career was marked by his hard work and dedication. He built an impressive skill set as an accomplished carpenter, ensuring that every project was completed to perfection. His craftsmanship was not only a source of pride for him but also a means through which he mentored others in the woodworking craft. He worked diligently at the family sawmill with his father in-law.
Mervyn's personality was characterized by his genuine and loving nature. Those who knew him understood that he was a man of his word, a person who always provided support to those in need. Whether it was through his role as a father or as a friend, Mervyn was a steady presence in the lives of many, and he derived great joy from being able to uplift others.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Becky Graybeal Russell; daughter, Vickie Cooper of Warrensville; son Thomas Russell (Jennifer) of Warrensville; brother Lee Russell (Debbie) of Marked Tree, Arkansas; sister Bonnie Franks (Rick) of Marked Tree, Arkansas; two grandchildren, Josie Russell and Will Russell; godson Gareth Berry; also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Mervyn is preceded in death by his father, Thomas Odell Russell; mother, Hollis Duvall Russell; brother, William Russell; and sisters Kathy Lucas, Zettie Ann Croney, and Kay Brashears.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 31, 2024 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel & Gardens from 5:00 until 7:00pm.
