Fred Brooks, age 70 of Warrensville died peacefully in his home on the morning of Monday, July 11, 2016. He was born August 15, 1945 in Ashe County to John Henry Brooks and Lou Bernice Brooks. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers Charles Brooks, Ivory Dean Brooks, Jay Brooks, Harold Brooks, and James "Bunk" Brooks, three sisters Inis Burchette, Pauline Tipton, and Shirley Anderson. Surviving are his sons Jon and wife Beth of Elkin and Joseph and special friend Valerie Cruey of Jefferson, girlfriend and companion Pat Blackburn and her family of Lansing, two sisters Helen Robinson and husband Joe, and Bessie Cornett, grandson Clint, along with several nieces and nephews.
Fred was a loving and devoted father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his sons and grandson, his pride and joy. He was a faithful companion to his longtime girlfriend, Pat. Fred loved and cared for Pat and her family, and treated them as if they were his own. He never met a stranger and never had a known enemy. Fred spent countless hours giving of his time and putting others before himself, always lending a helping hand to a neighbor in need. He retired from Blue Ridge Electric in 2006 after 31 years of loyal service, doing so a couple of years early to care for his ailing brother, Jay. Needing something to fill his time, he started delivering meals through the Meals on Wheels program at Ashe Outreach Ministries in Creston, always spending extra time to visit with the folks on his route. Fred was a spiritual man and an active member of Warrensville Baptist Church. Fred enjoyed going to flea markets, car shows, and listening to music. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and community.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 13, 2016 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Badger Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 14, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. at Warrensville Baptist Church by Rev. Wade Huntsinger and Rev. Tommy Dollar. Burial will follow in Brooks Cemetery.
