Mr. John Banner Powers age 78, of Lansing, NC died Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at Watauga Medical Center. Mr. Powers was born May 15, 1939 in Ashe County to Austin and Mammie Powers. Mr. Powers was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Bo Powers, sisters, Dare Billings, Nancy Little, Allice Mikeal, Brenda Powers and Martha Powers.
John graduated from Lansing High School in 1959. He was a bus driver and excelled in baseball, basketball and football. Although he was very competitive, he played to have fun. After high school he worked for a short time at Cannon Mills in Kannapolis. He soon moved back to Ashe and raised tobacco while working at Peanut's Grocery in Lansing. He also worked at Sprague Electric on two different occasions. His final working years were spent in the insurance business, working for Farm Bureau and Nationwide, where he made many lifelong friends. Through the years he enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors. He was an avid fan of Duke and the Redskins. John loved the Lord and attending services at Sturgill's Baptist Church, where he became a member in 2013. His grandchildren were his pride and joy! Spending time with them made him happiest. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. John will be sorely missed by all.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Lloyd Day and Brother Ralph Smith. Burial will follow in May Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm prior to the service.
Mr. Powers is survived by: Wife, Judy Powers, Sons, Rick (Joyce) Powers of Warrensville and Mike (Linda) Powers of Lansing, Daughters, Teresa (Tim) Dupree of Fleetwood, Christina (Bobby) Jones of Lansing and Jennifer (Randy) Hanson of Jefferson, Sisters, Mary (Arlis) Glenn of PA, Margie (Ken) Green of Hendersonville and Rita (Mike) Johnson of West Jefferson, special caregiver, Vanessa Roper also surviving are 10 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Flowers will be appreciated, or memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
