Marion Alton Pool (September 18, 1923-May 12, 2017) died peacefully after a brief illness. He was born in Hot Springs, South Dakota and epitomized the Greatest Generation, serving proudly in Europe in World War II and receiving many awards, including the Bronze Star, working hard in business management, and volunteering tirelessly at his churches, in SCORE, SHIIP, and as an active leader in Kiwanis International.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Merit Allen and Mary Seivers Pool; his first wife Frances Jones Pool; his second wife Helen Finch Pool; his brother Merit Allen Pool, Jr.; his sister Martha Pool Anderson; and his infant sister Mary Eileen Pool.
Survivors include daughters Dr. Karen Pool Helgeson (Dr. James) of Laurinburg, NC and Alison Pool-Crane (Rev. Lee) of Indian Rocks Beach, FL; sons Dr. Michael L. Pool (Dale) of Greensboro and James M. Pool (The Rev. Dr. Jayne) of Birmingham, AL; 2 granddaughters and 2 grandsons; 3 great-grandchildren; step-daughter Carolyn Finch, and step-son, John Finch (Brenda) and 4 step-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held in the Helton Cemetery, behind Helton United Methodist Church in Lansing, NC, at 1:00 p.m. on June 10, 2017, where he will be buried next to his first wife, Frances.
His children wish to thank the caregivers at St. Martin's in the Pines, in Birmingham, Alabama, where Marion lived the last two years of his life, and we suggest that any memorials be made to St. Martin's (4941 Montevallo Rd, Birmingham AL 35210; www.stmartinsinthepines.org).
