Mrs. Alma Little Blevins

Alma Little Blevins passed away early Saturday morning, July 26, 2014 at Margate Health Center in West Jefferson, North Carolina. A native of Ashe County, she was born July 3, 1917, to Granville Everette Little and Eda Belle Brooks Little in Crumpler, North Carolina. She graduated from Nathan's Creek High School in 1935. She attended Mae's School of Beauty Culture in North Wilkesboro and obtained a cosmetologist license. She married Banner Paul Blevins in 1939. They lived in Maryland, outside of Washington DC, where they both worked at a tourist motor court, and enjoyed attending horse races. They returned to Ashe County to live with and look after her mother on the family farm. Alma worked for a time at Nathan's Creek Elementary School as a teaching assistant. She loved working with young people.
Alma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers: Gwyn Parks Little and John Clifford Little; as well as her sister Blanche Little McMillan. She is survived by one nephew: Dean Johnson (and his wife Carol) of North Wilkesboro; and eight nieces: Dorinda Fowler of Crumpler, North Carolina; Maxine Luck (and her husband Bill) of Roanoke, Virginia; Nellie Houck of Grassy Creek, North Carolina; Joann Johnson of West Jefferson, North Carolina; Beverly Matthews (and her husband Dennie) of Houston, Texas; Evlyn Grey (and her husband Eddie) of Washington, Iowa; Virgie Elliott of Bel Air, Maryland; and Audrey Thomasson (and her husband Steve) of Raleigh, North Carolina. She is also survived by several great, as well as great-great nieces and nephews.
Alma made beautiful handmade articles such as knitted sweaters, crocheted afghans, candle-wicked bedspreads, quilts, and intricate baskets. She was a wonderful story-teller and could make the past come to life for her listener. She loved to laugh. Stray animals found their way to her, and her bird feeders were always full. She collected friends of all ages, and was a great source of joy, as well as comfort, to them. She will be missed by many who feel blessed to have known her.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Brother Hugh Miller. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:00 -2:00 PM prior to the service.
Memorials may be made to ASPCA International, 424 E 92nd St. New York, NY 10128 or Ashe County Humane Society, PO Box 1776, West Jefferson, NC 28694.
