"Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern. Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it." - Ecclesiastes 12:6 and 7
Bessie Ruth Blevins Sexton was born January 9, 1924, in Grayson County, Virginia, to Oscar and Maggie Blevins. She was married to Earl Sexton in November, 1937. To this union was born one son, Ward. She passed from this life on January 25, 2014, making her stay on earth 90 years and 16 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 7 brothers, and one sister. She is survived by her son, Ward Sexton and wife, Helen, of Lansing, NC; 2 brothers: Marvin Blevins and wife, Wanda, of Lansing, NC; and Montie Blevins and wife, Angie, of Jefferson, NC; 2 sisters: Ella Mae Francis, of Jefferson, NC; and Wilma Richardson, of Lansing, NC; 2 grandchildren: Andy Sexton and wife, Rachel; and Holly McClure and husband, Joey, all of Lansing, NC; and one great-grandchild, Maggie Sexton, of Lansing, NC. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
Bessie united with Silas Creek Baptist Church in 1937. She attended as long as she was able and remained a member until death. She accompanied her husband, a minister, to churches in various places, and supported his ministry in any way that she could. During those years, in addition to being a homemaker, she was employed for a time at Sprague Electric Company. She managed to find time for all this and still had time for family, relatives, and friends.
In her later years, her health declined greatly. She was in a nursing home for a number of years. During that time she had a desire to do things that she had once done and to see family and friends of by-gone days, many of whom were gone from this world. In the words of the poet, Whittier, "I long for household voices gone, for vanished smiles I long, but God has led my dear ones on and He can do no wrong." On January 25, we believe that her longing ceased, that while her body was left to return to dust, her spirit and soul went to God, as scripture says.
Funeral services were held on January 28, 2014, at the Silas Creek Baptist Church, conducted by Elders Fred Richardson, Danny Miller, Lundy Finley Jr., Tommy Dollar, Joey McClure, and by speaker Ward Sexton. Burial followed in the Sexton Cemetery. The family received friends from 12:00 - 2:00 PM prior to the service.
