Erma Hart Badger, age 86 of McConnell Street, Jefferson, passed away on Tuesday evening, October 15, 2013. Mrs. Badger was born on January 12, 1927 in Ashe County to the late Fred Cox and Musie Duke Hart of Nathans Creek.
She was a faithful member of Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church, attending regularly until she became too ill to attend. She began work as a beautician in Baltimore, MD. She and her late husband, James, later owned People's Drug in West Jefferson and Jefferson Drug in Jefferson. Erma loved working with the public and meeting new people; she retired from People's Drug at age 84. Erma was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved being with her family, going places with friends, dancing, cooking, sewing quilts, and enjoyed having company in her home that she was so proud of. She lived life to the fullest. She did not mind hard work and believed in enjoying herself. She loved traveling and she and her husband traveled extensively over the years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Alfred Badger; five brothers, Jewel (Helen), Sydney Ray, Ted (Nancy), Paul (Ethel), and Atha Hart; and three sisters, Chola Mae (William Buck), Rita (Claude), and Nina (Cliff). She is survived by her brother, Clyde Hart and wife, Arlene of Jefferson; son, J. Michael Badger and wife, Jackie of Jefferson; daughters, Rebecca Badger Houck, Lois Badger Miller and husband, Matthew, Jennifer Badger Holman and husband, Danny all of Wilkesboro; grandchildren, Andrea Badger (Kerry) Witherspoon of West Jefferson, Dr. Michael Channing (Jennifer) Badger of Summerfield, Brittney Miller (Kevin) Pierce of Huntersville, Ryan Badger (Devon) Houck of Fleetwood, Nathaniel James (Sarah) Holman of Nashville, TN, Tyler Miller (Nicholas) Bost of Salisbury, Holly Holman (Joey) Stone of Wilkesboro; great-grandchildren, Courtlyn and Cagney Reeves, Annie and Henry Badger, Claire and Keaton Houck, Kennedy Pierce, Canaan Stone, Briggs Bost and Owen Holman.
A celebration of Mrs. Badger's life will be conducted at 2 P.M., Friday, October 18, 2013 from the West Jefferson First Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Goss officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Graveside services will be private with her grandsons and grandsons-in-law serving as pallbearers. She will lie in state from 10 A.M. until 11 A.M. Friday at Badger Funeral Home.
