Mrs. Janie Richardson McNeill died on Friday morning, March 28, 2014 at her home in Jefferson, North Carolina following a brief illness. Mrs. McNeill was born to Bradley and Dale Quillen Richardson in the Rugby community of Grayson County, Virginia on March 3, 1940. She was an exceptional student, graduating from Virginia-Carolina High School in 1958. She continued her education at Berea College in Kentucky, where she earned a dual degree in history and political science. She would go on to earn a masters degree at Syracuse University in Public Administration and also a graduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In her professional life Mrs. McNeill worked as an accountant, first at city hall in Richmond, Virginia, then at Burlington Industries in Greensboro, North Carolina and Bristol, Tennessee. After moving to Jefferson, she continued her accounting career at the CPA firm of Worth, Goodman & Goodman in West Jefferson. She enjoyed a life-long love affair with reading and photography. In her years of retirement she enjoyed tending to the wildflowers and wildlife that surrounded her home, becoming especially fond of the hummingbirds that visited there. Mrs. McNeill was well-versed in her family's genealogy and always held a special affinity for her native community of Rugby.
Mrs. McNeill is survived by her devoted husband of 30 years, Garvin McNeill of the home, two stepdaughters, Charlene Brooks (Mark) and Maxie Chromer of Ohio; one stepson, Garvin McNeill, Jr. (Jennifer) of Virginia Beach, Virginia; one sister, Patsy Durr of Jefferson; one brother, David Richardson (JoAnn) of Galax, Virginia; and a special "sister" cousin: Rhonda Walls of Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. Eight step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. She was especially close to her sister and brother's children: Mark, Barbara, Rebecca, Melissa and Martha (Patsy); and Aime and Alison (David).
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 31, 2014 at the Badger Funeral Home chapel in West Jefferson by James McNeill and David VanHoy. Burial will follow in the Jefferson City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
