Jennie Clyde Worth Hightower died Monday, May 23, 2016 at Ashe Memorial Hospital in Jefferson, North Carolina.
Jennie was born in Jefferson on November 4, 1926 to the late Joseph Cox Worth and Ina Estelle Phipps Worth. She was a graduate of Jefferson High School and attended Brevard College and Greensboro College. She worked as a legal secretary for W.B. Austin, Attorney at Law, before her marriage in 1952 to Dr. D. Earl Hightower. Jennie worked first part-time and later full-time as office manager for her husband's practice of veterinary medicine in Jefferson before retiring in 1976.
Jennie felt the call of Christ at age 8 and joined Jefferson United Methodist Church, to which she gave her life-long devotion and service. Her first love was the church choir, of which she was a member for 70 years before retiring at age 82. She served in many other capacities for the church, including in the Children's Department and on the Administrative Board. Jennie was a district and local officer with the United Methodist Women and very much enjoyed being involved in the mission work of the United Methodist Church through that organization.
Jennie was community minded and enjoyed working on civic endeavors for her native town and county. Particularly, she was a founding member of The Museum of Ashe County History, Inc. and was proud to have participated in the restoration of the old 1904 Courthouse where the museum is located in Jefferson.
Jennie was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her sister Sarah Elizabeth Worth and her brother Joseph Phipps Worth. She is survived by her daughter Emily Hightower Johnston (David) of Greensboro, NC and her son Joseph Earl Hightower (Donna) of Cary, NC and Jefferson. Her grandsons Peter Worth Johnston (Amberly) and Jason Alexander Hightower and her sister Ina Ruth Hurley (Gale) and her brother David Thomas Worth (Janice) also survive.
