Mrs. Opal Elliott Stansberry age 88, of Lansing, was called home by her heavenly father on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Stansberry was born April 5, 1925 in Ashe County, to Joseph Edward and Celia Fairzina Elliott. She married Gwyn Stansberry on Nov. 4, 1944 and they were married 55 years until he passed away in 1999. She had one brother, Spencer Elliott, who preceded her in death, and one sister, Jewel Hutchinson of High Point, NC. She is survived by: two sons, Joseph Gwyn Stansberry and wife Brenda and Johnny Michael Stansberry and wife Teresa all of Lansing, 4 grandchildren, Jennifer Russell of Warrensville, Julie Joines of Lansing, Holly Eggers of Hawaii and Jonathon Stansberry of Lansing; 9 great-grandchildren, all of whom were her pride and joy. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Opal loved God and professed a hope in Jesus Christ early in life. She was a faithful member of New Home Baptist Church. She loved her church family dearly and was a neighbor to all. She always made the communion bread from scratch and took her vacation from work every year during the time of revival so she wouldn't have to miss. She loved God and her family, always putting them first before anything else. She also loved her friends and had many faithful ones. She was an open, caring person, who always had a smile. She loved to laugh and loved people. Opal was a very strong person and worked hard all of her life. She worked at Sprague Electric for 26 years and retired from there. She had many friends and good times there. She also helped Gwyn on the farm, raising tobacco, cattle, corn and a garden as long as she was able. She loved to cook for her family, and anyone else who was around, helping on the farm. We will always remember her biscuits, dumplings, pinto beans and her apple pies. Her gravy and biscuits were "divine". She loved to can, putting up vegetables, jams, jellies and apple butter. She and Gwyn kept hogs and chickens and canned their own sausage and meats. They had milk cows and sold the milk. They provided for their children and grandchildren with fresh milk and butter, churned by hand. Opal put a big helping of love in everything she served. She never had a visitor they she didn't try to feed. She loved babies and children and was blessed to see all of her 9 great-grandchildren. She loved to read. We take comfort in knowing that she is at rest in the Lord and rejoicing with all of her loved ones who awaited her in heaven. She and her wise, loving words and deeds will live on as well, in the hearts of her family and friends.
