Sharon "Sue" Haire Leek died on March 27, 2017. Sue was born on November 28, 1949, in Ashe County. She attended Wingate College, East Tennessee State University, and Appalachian State University, graduating with a degree in Early Education, and started her teaching career in 1972. Sue retired in 2002 after first teaching at Lansing Elementary School, then Blue Ridge Elementary School after the school system consolidated. Being a kindergarten teacher was a great passion for Sue, and she often spoke of the love she felt for her students and her teaching experience.
As an accomplished artist, Sue enjoyed painting and making a variety of crafts with her mother, Mabel. She also had a love for 60s rock music and dancing.
Sue is preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Mabel Elliott Gentry.
She is survived by her son Derek Leek (Erica) of Raleigh, NC; a grandson Elias Leek and a granddaughter Mercy Leek of Raleigh, NC; sister Amanda Gentry (Wendy Painter) of Nathans Creek, NC; stepsons Matthew Leek of Bristol, TN and Jason Leek (Amy) of Bristol, VA; and three step-grandchildren Courtney Leek, Lyndsy Leek and Lacy Leek.
A gathering of family and friends will be at Badger Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, March 31, 2017.
The family would like to thank Ashe County Adult Social Services, Ashe Assisted Living and Medi Home Health and Hospice for their loving care of Sue.
