Paul Avery, 81, of Cooper City, Florida, formerly of Glendale Springs, NC died Wednesday morning March 5, 2003 after a brief illness.
He was born in 1921 in North Adams, Mass. to Henry and Helen (Wright) Avery of Charlemont, Mass. He was a 1939 graduate of Deerfield Academy and a 1943 graduate of Amherst College. He was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving as Torpedo Officer on the USS Melvin which saw action during the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines.
He married Betty Wheaton of Pawtucket, RI in 1947. She preceded him in death in 1992. Mr. Avery was employed first by General Electric in Schenectady, NY, Pittsfield, Mass, and New York City, and was thenVice President and Controller for Silver Burdett/ General Learning Corporation in Morristown, New Jersey until his retirement in 1982. During retirement he spent many years close to family in Glendale Springs, North Carolina. He spent his final years with his daughter Carol and her family in Florida.
Mr. Avery was preceded in death by his wife Betty, a sister Helen, two brothers, Henry and Burton, and by his eldest son, Chris. He is survived by four children, Andrew L. Avery of Lancaster, Ohio, Kevin W. Avery of Ballston Spa, NY, Mrs. Carol Bell of Cooper City, Florida, and Paul O. Avery Jr. of Lancaster, Ohio. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Carolyn Johnsen of Gulfport, Florida, and by eleven grandchildren.
Interment was at the Church of the Frescos Cemetery in Glendale Springs, North Carolina.
