Percy Eugene Calloway Jr. went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at the age of 85. Eugene was born April 8, 1939, in Washington, North Carolina to Percy Eugene Calloway Sr. and Mildred Beacham Calloway. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his lovely wife of over 40 years, Darlene Grogan Calloway who passed on in 2021.
Eugene was saved, baptized, and a member of Valley Home Baptist Home where he was an active member until he was no longer physically able to attend services. He enjoyed helping around the church including painting and making signs as well as inviting people to church. He would often sing at church, help with Bible Schools alongside his wife Darlene, or help in any other way he could be of service to the Lord. Eugene and Darlene also quietly helped several members of the church and their community during their times of need.
Eugene studied the Bible and loved to discuss his readings with whoever would listen. He would take notes, millions of notes, in his Bible or anything he could find to write on. He was also keen on history, westerns, UFOs, and racing. He met and mingled with the best of racers like Richard Petty, Junior Johnson, and Fireball Roberts with whom he shared a Lucky Strikes cigarette in the infield.
Eugene is survived by his daughter, Vickie Calloway, and grandson, Avery Holman, both of Todd, and his son, Kip Calloway, of Boone. Eugene is also survived by a special cousin, Tammy Beacham Polson his sister-in-law, Barbara Testerman, and his brother-in-law and friend, Junior Testerman.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at the Rash Cemetery by Rev. Guy Testerman and Rev. Ken Holmes.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Rash Cemetery Fund in care of Gene Rash, 1831 Piney Creek Road, Lansing, NC 28643.
