Peter Harlan Avery

Peter Harlan Avery, better known as Pete, age 80 of Jefferson, died Monday, November 30, 2020 at his home.  Mr. Avery was born September 2, 1940 in Massachusetts to the late Burton Wright and Barbara Goodwin Avery.  In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife Betty Lou Phillips Avery.  Pete was a member of the Massachusetts Army National Guard.  He worked for his grandfather in rural Massachusetts in his pallet shop and home delivered Bond Bread and later delivered propane gas.  Pete also enjoyed working with the maintenance crew at Vermont's Mt. Snow Ski Area as a lift operator.  He moved to North Carolina and worked at Sprague Electric and later at Gates Rubber Company where he retired.  After retirement he worked at his favorite place, Mountain Aire Golf Course.  Pete was a member of Jefferson United Methodist Church.  His favorite pastimes were landscaping, gardening and bird and squirrel watching.  He also was an avid history buff.

Mr. Avery is survived by his children from his first marriage; son, Allen Wayne Avery, daughter, Barbara Mary Gordon of Lexington, two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. From his second marriage he is survived by two step-daughters, Charlene Austin of Fleetwood and Marlene Wilson and husband Eric of Boone and two step-grandsons.  Also surviving are two brothers, John Avery of Jefferson and Kirk Avery of Florida, and one sister, Karen Solon and husband Manny of Virginia and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside Services will be held on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at 2:00pm at Ashelawn Memorial Gardens by Rev. Ken Jones with Military Rites.
