Rev. Dwight Lee Barker age 88, of Crumpler, died on Sunday, December 20, 2015 at Watauga Medical Center. He was born on December 25, 1926 in Charlotte, NC to Simon Carpenter and Annie Coffey Barker. Rev. Barker was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Patricia B. Barker, son, Steven Elliott Barker and two sisters. Graduating from Erskine College of Seminary, he served as a Presbyterian Minister for 64 years and was also a Chaplain Lt. Col. in the U.S. Army. For one year he traveled for World Relief for his first cousin Rev. Billy Graham. After moving to Ashe County he preached as a supply minister at the Lansing Presbyterian Church and was a substitute teacher for the local schools. He was most proud of his ministry, serving the Lord.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Johnny Huffman, and Rev. David Blackburn. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on prior to the service at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.
Rev. Barker is survived by: wife, Libby Brinegar Barker, two daughters, Tammy Huffman & husband Keith of Crumpler, Tonya Miller of Mouth Of Wilson, VA, son, Dwight Lee Barker, Jr. of Monroe, five grandchildren, Brittany Phillips, Ryan Huffman, Preston Huffman, Dakota Eller, Tori Graybeal, four great-grandchildren, Reagan Phillips, Austin Phillips, Silas Huffman, Grace Eller, one niece, and four nephews also survive.
