Rita Jane Hanks

Rita Jane Hanks, age 73 of Lansing, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2023 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. She was born in Ashe County on April 9, 1950 to Avery and Maxine Griffitts Hanks. Rita was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Bobby Hanks.

Rita was a dedicated member of Sturgills Baptist Church for over 50 years. She enjoyed attending services, and helping with church events. Rita felt blessed to be part of the church community that she cherished.

Rita found joy in serving others, whether by playing Mrs. Claus at Christmastime or volunteering around the community. She loved spending time with her family and friends. Rita was known for her amazing homecooked meals that would bring everyone together. She enjoyed collecting cookbooks.

Rita is survived by her special love Denver Caudill, aka Santa Claus of Lansing, uncle, Gary Griffitts (Ann) of Lansing, two aunts Darlene Griffitts of Lansing and Geraldine Vencill of Sugar Grove VA, other special family and friends, Cathy Clark (Billy), Debbie Copas, Penny Grubb (David), Katherine Sturgill (Edward), Tonya Denny (Lee), James Caudill (Anita) all of Ashe County.  She touched many lives with her kind heart, generous spirit and excellent cooking. Rita will be forever loved and never forgotten.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at 11:00 am at Sturgills Baptist Church by Rev. Lloyd Day. Burial will follow in Zion Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 pm Monday, October 23, 2023 at Badger Funeral Home.
