Robert Maxwell Darnell, better known as Max, age 70, of Jefferson, passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Max was born on March 3, 1954, to Ford and Tressie Mae Calhoun Darnell, Max lived a life rooted in faith, love, and generosity. He was preceded in death by his father, his daughter, Kansas Genora Darnell and his wife, Shirley Ann Darnell.
Max had a deep passion for ministry, dedicating much of his time to serving others through his work with the "Riders of Faith" ministry. He believed in the power of compassion and kindness, always ready to lend a helping hand or even give his last dollar to someone in need. His charitable spirit and unwavering commitment to his faith left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
A true lover of nature and the outdoors, Max found peace and joy in the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains.
Max was a loving son, father, and grandfather who cherished his family above all else. His warm heart and open personality meant he never met a stranger—he could strike up a conversation with anyone and made friends wherever he went.
He is survived by his son, Cody Darnell and wife, Deva of West Jefferson, his mother, Tressie Darnell of West Jefferson, brother, Rex Darnell and wife, Helen of Lansing and a half-brother, Lonnie Ford Darnell. Two grandchildren, Addilyn Brooke Darnell and Lake Maxwell Darnell as well as several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 18, 2024 at 5:00pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Rick Miller and Rev. Nathan Jones.
The family will receive friends from 4:00-5:00pm one hour prior to the service at Ashelawn.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the family in care of Ashelawn Memorial Chapel & Gardens; 3470 US Highway 221 N. Jefferson, NC 28640.
Max Darnell's passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of his loved ones, but his spirit will live on in the lives he touched and the many stories of kindness, faith, and love he leaves behind.
