Roger William Porter

Mr. Roger William Porter, age 68 of Grassy Creek, died on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston Salem. Mr. Porter was born on March 22, 1946 in Ashe County, NC to the late James Wilford and Alta Paisley Porter. Mr. Porter was a founding member of the Helton Ambulance Service and a member of the New River Volunteer Fire Department. Roger was one of the first EMT's in the state. After his retirement from Thomasville Furniture he opened and operated Helton Creek Campground. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and enjoyed anything to do with westerns.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at 4:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Allen Huffman, Rev. Billy Joe Blevins, and Rev. David Brooks. Burial will follow in Baptist Chapel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.

Mr. Porter is survived by: his wife, Rita Parsons Porter; two sons, Tim Porter and wife Becky, Randy Porter and wife Melissa, all of Grassy Creek; daughter, Regan Perry and husband Randy of Lansing; two sisters, Sue Spolitwitz and husband Ted of Lynchburg, VA, Judy Porter Poe and husband Roy of West Jefferson; six grandchildren, Lyndsey Strassburger, Maranda Barker, Nikki Barker, Wesley Porter, Matthew Porter, Sydney Perry; two great-grandchildren, Elijah Strassburger, and Jon-Luc Porter. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
