Sallie Miller Scott, 96, died Friday morning, June 30, 2017, at Margate Health and Rehab
Center in Jefferson, NC, following an extended illness.
Sallie was born on March 12, 1921, in Ashe County, NC. She graduated from Appalachian
State Teachers College in 1942 with a degree in primary education. As a teacher in the Ashe
County School System, she had a profound influence on the lives of her students throughout
her career. Sallie was not one to be easily forgotten by those who were in her classroom, and
throughout the years her former students have fondly remembered Mrs. Scott as their first grade
teacher, and more often than not, their favorite teacher.
A constant theme in Sallie's life was a love of literature. She also displayed an astonishing
ability to memorize and quote poetry. Rarely was there an occasion for which she could not
supply an appropriately fitting quote. Her remarkable memory, even when it began to fail her in
her later years, proved quite tenacious when it came to quoting verse.
Sallie was predeceased by her husband, William Stewart Scott; her father George Miller and her
mother Ella Mae Callaway Miller, her siblings Georgia Miller Lewis Bryant, Allan Miller, Hazel
Miller Hodges, Harry Lee Miller, and Mary Nell Miller Weaver.
She is survived by her children Katrina Scott Sullivan and her husband John of Charlotte, Danny
S Scott of West Jefferson, and Ann A Scott of West Jefferson, as well as siblings Silver Miller
Abernethy, Jimmy Miller, and Betty Lou Miller Monroe.
In her last years, as Sallie succumbed to the onslaught of dementia and stroke, she began to
disappear a little at a time. But even as the Sallie we all loved began to fade, there was always
something of her that remained. While living, she was never entirely lost to those who knew her
best. A look, a sparkle in her eyes, a gesture, or a rarely spoken word would reveal that she
was still there. Thankfully, she left her family and friends with many memories, the fragments of
which we can piece together into a portrait that will keep her alive for all of us in the years to
come.
