Stella Mae Gentry Sweeney, 88, of Fleetwood, NC passed away on February 13, 2018. Stella Mae was born on July 24, 1929, to the late Reverend George Paton Gentry and the late Emma Jean Poe Gentry, in Fleetwood, NC. As the second youngest of eight, she lived at home where she was raised to love the Lord Jesus Christ and honor Him with her life.
She retired from TT Electronics, formally known as IRC, in Boone, NC, two months shy of 41 years of service in 2006.
Mrs. Sweeney enjoyed volunteering in the community and was very active in Relay for Life. She also served in the Winston-Salem chapter
of the Gary District High School and on occasion helped plan alumni reunions around the nation.
She was a lifelong member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Fleetwood. Over the years she served as Sunday School Superintendent,
Secretary, Treasurer of Woman’s Home Mission, Field worker, and Church Delegate.
Stella enjoyed singing and worshipping the Lord, fellowshipping with the saints, spending time with her children, and grandchildren,
traveling, fashions, sewing, and being with friends.. She especially enjoyed her Baptist Church Associations, revivals, and programs that involved children singing, and reciting recitations.
Stella Sweeney is survived by a son, Michael (Kimberly) of Mount Joy, PA, a daughter Sherri, of Greensboro, NC, a granddaughter Tanisha, and her three children Josiah, Jayden, and Zoey of Winston Salem, NC. A sister-in-law Lorraine Gentry, of Winston-Salem, NC, and a host of nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by all her brothers and sister beginning with the oldest Ray, Beulah, Kenzil (Bus), General Foch, George Allen, Bill and her youngest brother Gwyn.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 24 at 1:00 in the afternoon at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel. Internment will follow in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 am to 1 pm, 2 hours prior to the service.
