Thelma Faye Wood

Thelma Faye Wood, age 96 of West Jefferson passed away Saturday, July 27, 2024 at her home. Mrs. Wood was born July 20, 1928 in Ashe County to the late Alexander and Dare Bare Holman. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, George Howard Wood, brothers, Wade and J. W. Holman, son, Gerald Wood and son-in-law, Danny Sturgill.

Thelma was the epitome of the "greatest generation." Thelma grew up walking to church and working hard. She threw herself into raising her kids, grandkids and even the neighborhood kids. Almost every memory from anyone in these groups includes Thelma being a loving, faithful Christian who could be found reading her Bible daily. As a loved one, there was never a doubt she was praying for you.

If Thelma wasn't reading her Bible, she was fixing a feast for whoever happened to walk through the door that day (from a fridge filled to the brim). She'd make sure you'd leave her house "full as a tick," stray cats included! 

In 2016, she started living with her youngest daughter, Brenda, where she could be found playing cards every weekend with "her boys" which could mean her kids to her great-grandkids. While at her own home or at Brenda's, she loved having visitors and the conversations that followed. After many of the stories she was told, you'd hear her proclaim, "Well, I've heard it all!"

Thelma was known to spoil everyone. From making sure marshmallows were handpicked out of Lucky Charms cereal to frying you a hamburger in her cast iron skillet, playing kickball in the backyard, or flying a kite.

Without a doubt, Thelma was known to be a quick-witted, sassy, spunky, fiery, selfless, and 100% full of life until the end. If you were around Thelma any amount of time, you knew she loved "every bone in you."

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at NewCreation, formally Baldwin Community Church by Rev. Tim Roten and Rev. Tim Jones. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 pm prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Bethany Cemetery. 

Mrs. Wood is survived by four sons, David Wood of West Jefferson, Archie Wood of Crumpler, Ray Wood (Shelia) of Lansing and Mark Daniel Wood (Imogene) better known as Danny of Todd, two daughters, Mary Helen Eller (Wade) of Fleetwood and Brenda Sturgill of West Jefferson. 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, 3 step-grandchildren, 5 step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
